Q. Why do you use round bars when all of your competitors are square?
A. Precisely. Round bars offer the advantage of automatically accommodating loads on curved roofs (i.e. all cars), allow accessories to be rotated flat when not in use for improved aerodynamics and overhead clearance. Our bars are also about 15% stronger than competitive rectangular bars, making the rack more rigid and durable.
Q. What are the bars made of?
A. Pre-galvanized welded steel tubing with a high-density polyethylene coating.
Q. Can I cut bars down to length?
A. Yep. Use a hack saw to cut roundbars to any custom length. Do not use a tubing cutter as it would damage the HDPE coating. The endcaps will conceal any rough edges. Note that the section of bar that extends past a tower can be used to support loads or attach accessories. Be sure to leave at least an inch on each side for the bar end-caps, or two inches for accessories like the BoatLoader, as there is no good way to re-lengthen a bar (though one of our dealers will be glad to sell you a new pair).
Q. How much can I carry?
A. This varies by vehicle, load type and crossbar length. Check the fit list to find out what load types (bikes, skis, boats, etc.) and weight capacity applies to your car. The fit list will also tell you the best crossbar length (48”, 58”, 66”, or 78”) to use. You can go up one size if necessary, but duck your head.
Q. Why don’t endcaps come with the Round Bars?
A. We elected to include them with every set of towers that we sell instead because that is the most common time that people need them. Additionally, attempts to package them with crossbars have been in vain since once installed they don’t come off easily, and they were hard to protect during shipping. Round Bar Endcaps are also available as a replacement part.
Q. What Kind of maintenance should I perform?
A. Check the endcaps for damage and replace if necessary. Damaged endcaps or bar coating will lead to corrosion. As there is no "approved” method of repair, bars should be replaced if the HDPE coating gets damaged.
Q. When I took the endcaps off of the bars I saw rust. What’s up with that?
A. It is normal for the inside of the crossbars to show rust. Keeping endcaps on the bars will keep this from becoming a functional problem for years.
